From the Principal

I am pleased to provide you with the Erwin K. Washburn Primary School’s report card for the 2004-2005 school year. It contains a great deal of information about our school.

Our staff is highly qualified: All of our professional staff members are licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Education, and all of our academic teachers are HIGHLY QUALIFIED according to the federal definition, meaning that they have demonstrated competence in the subjects that they teach.

The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) requires states to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) determinations for all schools that serve grades above kindergarten. The standard AYP formula includes student participation, assessment, and attendance data. Because MCAS testing in Massachusetts currently begins in grade three, an alternative method was used to make AYP determinations for schools that provide education only through grades one and two.

Therefore, the Massachusetts Department of Education follows graduates of the early childhood schools and applies results from their 2003 and 2004 grade three reading tests to their former school which, in Carver, is the Primary School.

Governor John Carver Elementary

Massachusetts State-Wide Average

As you can see on the grade 3 Reading Report Card:

A higher percentage of Governor John Carver Elementary third graders scored in the Proficient category on the 2004 MCAS Reading test than students statewide.

According to the state, Governor John Carver Elementary grade 3 students are making “Adequate Yearly Progress” on MCAS. The state rated Governor John Carver Elementary School’s results as “High” in English Language Arts.

We will continue to work hard to show more improvement in Reading as highlighted in our School Improvement Plan. Our staff continues to participate in professional development throughout the school year and summer to enhance instructional strategies that will increase student achievement.

Sincerely,

Candance Weiler, Principal
