From the Superintendent
The Carver Public School district is pleased to present to the parents and community the Annual Report Card of our schools. This report card is mandated by the national No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 (NCLB). Each year, school districts throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are asked to report to the community, information regarding enrollment, teacher qualifications and student performance. This information is measured by the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) toward improvement.
In an effort to better understand the reporting requirements, I have included a definition of criteria that is used in the state reporting. One concept, HIGHLY QUALIFIED, refers to a standard that all classroom teachers of English Language Arts, mathematics, science, and or history/social studies must have passed a competency test, completed an undergraduate degree, or participated in significant professional development, in the content area or areas in which they teach. All full and part time classroom teachers employed by Carver Public Schools will meet this criteria by the 2006 deadline.
A second concept to be defined is Adequate Yearly Progress. The federal government has established a goal that all students will be PROFICIENT in English Language Arts and mathematics by the year 2014. Each year, all school districts in Massachusetts must demonstrate ongoing improvement in the percentage of students attaining proficiency.
As of this report card, the Carver Public Schools have met the AYP criteria established by the Massachusetts Department of Education. We have aligned our school committee, district, and individual school goals to assist us in insuring continuous progress.
The following goals were established by the School Committee for the 2005-2006 school year:
¨ To conduct an evaluation of the Middle School’s programs and services.
¨ To review the Comprehensive Guidance Services, kindergarten through grade twelve.
¨ To ascertain the effectiveness of instructional practices in the area of literacy, kindergarten through grade twelve.
¨ To determine the extent to which our facilities adequately support our instructional programs.
To support the school committee’s goals and to foster ongoing improvement in teaching and learning, the following three goals were adopted by the district:
¨ Establish a challenging, comprehensive curriculum to be implemented in each content area.
¨ Increase use of effective teaching strategies.
¨ Develop assessment practices that ensure student monitoring and achievement
The mission of Carver Public Schools is to provide a challenging, comprehensive education in a safe environment where all students are respected as individuals.
We believe:
¨ Decisions should be made in the best interest of students.
¨ Every student is important and deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
¨ All students can be successful learners in an appropriate setting that meets their learning style.
¨ Providing students access to athletics, arts, and music fosters individual creativity.
¨ Learning is ongoing and life-long.
¨ School, home, & community partnerships are vital for continuous learning and growth.
