Topics:

1. What is in our library?  2. How do we use print and online sources of information in an ethical way?  3. How do we use our online encyclopedias and almanacs?  4.  What is a good Web site?  What is a bad Web site?  5.  How can we be safe on the Internet? 

Objectives/Students will be able to:

1. Access and select appropriate information. 2.  Understand intellectual property; use citation and ethics. 2. Recognize the difference between authoritative and unreliable information on the Web.  5. Import digital images into a document. 6.  Be more aware of situations that have happened with other children who gave out personal information online and met with strangers.  Exercise good judgment and make safe choices online.

Student Activities/ Instructional Strategies:

Day 1- Dewey locations in print and online.  In pairs create and print a Bookbag list of at least 5 books on a selected topic.

Day 2- Search World Book Encyclopedia and online almanac.

Day 3- In groups explore several given Web sites and determine their validity: accuracy, currency, bias, commercial persuasion.  Discuss the Web site with the class and judge whether it is a good or bad source of information based on selective criteria.

Day 4-Officer Bassett/Library Information & Technology discussion of information about missing and exploited children, reading articles in groups, then using point of view and prediction to role play individual stories

Information Skills:

1. Access print and electronic information effectively.  Select appropriate types and amounts of information.  2. Access and select information from online encyclopedias and almanacs.  3. Evaluate and demonstrate good and bad Web sites based on criteria.  4. Do not give out personal information on the Web.  Be wary of strangers.  Know what has happened to others.  Help each other and not be afraid to tell an adult.    5. Read by choice with an understanding of the level of factual information in nonfiction, historical fiction, and fiction.

 

Technology Skills:

1. Use a scanner for a photo or drawn picture. 2. Insert the scanned image into a document.
